Legislation and Regulations
Safety Signs are an important part of your Health & Safety system in managing the risks and hazards which your staff or visitors may encounter.
In principal no identified hazard or potentially hazardous situation should be encountered without prior warning of the risk beforehand and with control measures identified. Safety signs play a vital role in this function.
Signs should be relevant to the hazards and work activities taking place and should comply with NZS/AS 1319: 1994 Safety signs for the occupational environment.
This standard defines the following types of Safety Sign:
Regulatory Signs: Contain instructions which if not complied with may be an offense at law or contrary to site or employment policies.
Hazard Signs: Warn of hazards which may be encountered and which carry a risk of injury
Emergency Information Signs: Indicate the location of emergency equipment, exits and first aid equipment.
Fire Signs: Advise the location of fire alarms and fire fighting equipment.
Colours, graphics and text formats are all specified by NZS/AS 1319.
Additional regulations apply to the Signs required for storage of hazardous goods under the Hazardous Substances (Identification) Regulations 2001.
For Building signs Clause F8 of the New Zealand Building Code applies.
